It is a very simple installation. We are only licensed for Standard edition so no vDS or DRS. I agree on the firmware. I forgot to add that step but it was in the plan. The main reason being that I had the upgrade fail on 1 host already due to old microcode causing 2 NICs not to be recognized. I re-installed 4.1 and got it back in service. The servers are HP BL 460c G7s and I verified that vSphere 5.1 U1 is supported with the appropriate firmware levels and use of the HP modified ISO download from VMware which I have. I guess my biggest concern is how to gracefully disconnect the hosts from vCenter without disturbing the running VMs. As long as I can do that and successfully re-attach them once vCenter is up and running, I'll be in good shape.
