Thanks WoodyZ. I thought I would try producing an ISO from my XP Pro SP2 disc and it loaded in minutes from the ISO. Why it would not work from the disc in the superdrive is a mystery. XP SP3 on a disc loaded OK and also W8 to bootcamp so there would seem to be nothing wrong with the superdrive.
Funny things theses computers!
