What NICs can I use on home PC to begin learning ESXi (i7-3770k, 16GB RAM, 480GB SSD Raid 1, z68 EVGA MOBO)

Hi All,

I recently attempted to install VMware on my home PC (3770k, 16GB Ram, SSDs raid 1). Apparently the Marvell controllers on my z68 motherboard arent supported. Could anyone point me in the direction of a consumer grade (and price) NIC that I can install that will help me move past this issue? I cant afford to spend hundred on a NIC and I'd rather not use Workstation if possible.

vSphere Relication

1. If I created replication using VRA, my replicated VM will be in thick or thin provisioned format?

2. I PROD VM is moved from one storage or to another host, do I have to reconfigure replication?

3. Can I vMotion replicated VM from different storage or host?

4. Can replicated VMs be cloned or exported to OVF and then later powered on as additional test VMs?

This error likely means that the secure string stored to file password.txt cannot be properly decrypted.

You are using ConvertTo-SecureString without specific encryption key which mean the encrypt/decrypt operations are using Windows Data Protection API. I'm not sure how your setup is configured but most likely vRO is running under credentials that are not the same as credentials used to encrypt the content of the file password.txt.

To fix this, you must either

  • ensure that vRO/PowerShell plug-in is configured in such a way that the PS script is run with the same credentials you used to encrypt the content of password.txt,
  • or use the additional parameters of ConvertFrom-SecureString / ConvertTo-SecureString to use a specific encryption key (same for encrypt and decrypt operations).

SRM inventory mappings

What will happen to PROD VMs during failover/recovery if they were moved from the configured inventory mappings?

example: used a different network or storage or cluster

Re: Can't run VM due to missing snapshot hard drive

I deleted the snapshot and then the snapshot hard drive file ...

Deleting a snapshot from the Snapshot Manager, includes deleting the snapshot/delta .vmdk files once the data has been consolidated. If you did delete the files .vmdk manually, you will likely experience data loss if you go back to a previous .vmdk file. Anyway, assuming that the VM has no more snapshots (i.e. no more <vmname>-00000x.vmdk files in the VM's folder/package) you should be able to remove the currently connected virtual disk from the VM settings, and add the existing .vmdk. To ensure things do not become worse, I strongly recommend that you backup the current files, prior to changing things.

Thank you for providing an answer to your own question on this thread. This helped us setup some dynamic type goodness on our environment.

vRealize Operations custom retention for Academic Year

I believe the default retention for vROps 6.x is 2 months.  I need to find a way to keep data for a given period or normal activity (when users are active) and refer to that data during a slow period of time (when the system is significantly less busy).

Any ideas?

Kind Regards

Ben

Re: VSAN inqury

In my experience in VSAN 6.0-6.2, the following will happen if a copy disappears for 60 minutes and then returns later:

example: VM with FTT=1, 1TB VMDK

a host is left in maintenance mode for 60 minutes and components for this VM go absent

resync occurs at the 60 min mark, lose 1TB of disk space as the new copy is resynced across the cluster

maintenance mode host, exits maintenance mode and rejoins VSAN cluster

the resync across the cluster will take time to finish and then shortly after, the copy of the data from the maintenance mode host (that has exited maintenance mode by this time) will be deleted.

In this scenario, for a short period you will end up with 3 copies of the data, this can be problematic if the VMDKs are very large or you are close to running out of space. They mentioned that they may change this behavior in the future but it hasn't happened yet to reduce rebuild times from events like this, but I haven't seen it happen yet.

1. The policy you specify would also specify thick or thin (default is thin). The secondary copy will use the same thick/thin as the 1st copy.

2. You can't specify SSD or magnetic storage for VMDKs, capacity layer will always be magnetic. The SSDs in VSAN hybrid model are used as a cache, you can specify how much cache to allocate but this is recommended to be left at 0 (automatic cache level for VSAN).

Host not able to Connect due to DHCP lookup failure

Hi All,

I have a VMware host running under ESXi 6.0. It was running fine and last week it started giving "DHCP lookup failed" error. I tried rebooting (multiple times!) and also manually entering the config parameters such as ipv4 address, network mask and the gateway address. None of it has worked.

My entire project is on this server, which has several VMs. If you have any suggestion on how to resolve this issue, it is much appreciated.

Thanks very much!

ooh, are you on the little 12" MacBook? Yah... Storage is nice and fast, but the CPU is totally not good for VMs

The main thing adding more RAM will hurt performance is around snapshots and suspend state. It has to write the memory state to file, which takes more time when there's more memory assigned.

Otherwise it doesn't really make a difference until the VM starts paging, so you basically want to assign only a little bit more RAM than what the system is actually using, just enough so it doesn't page.

I like to disable the page-file in Windows as well, that helps when you have lots of RAM.

I'm running MacOS Sierra on my iMac. I'm not trying to create a Sierra VM. If it matters I was trying to create an El Capitan VM.

> Just curious: when this testing was run, did you experiment with host pagefile configuration at all?
Not at that time.
I used to use Windows PE LiveCDs with VMware Workstation years earlier and at that time the pagefile was a big problem.
Dont know if you know it but in first PE versions it was almost impossible to use a pagefile at all.In those versions the missing pagefile was a severe limitation.
On a regular Windows-installation I consider a reasonable sized pagefile a must.
Even more so if you want to run many VMs. I usually assign a pagefile with 2x size of RAM with fixed allocation so that you avoid high fragmentation.
If I have hostOS on a small SSD I assign a small pagefile on SSD and a large one on a regular disk.
About mainmem.useNamedFile ...
I WinXP and 2003 and older >WS versions it was possible to really get vmware-vmx.exe processes with several GBs of RAM allocated.
In Win7 and later and later WS versions this became impossible and nowadays you rarely see that a vmware-vmx process uses more than a few hundred MBs.
I dont know if this is because Windows displays the memory usage differently than before or if it is because WS works differently.
Unfortunately I never had the chance to do the same experiments on a host machgine that is often used nowadays - with amounts of RAM that exceeds 8Gb.
So I cant say how WS behaves when you go to the limits.
It looks like there is a max amount of VMs that can be used - independant of the available RAM.

Yes, I do have the 12 inch MacBook.  That's what I thought the problem would be.

VROPS 6.2.0.3528905 - Dashboard security to allow Edit

I'm on version 6.2.0.3528905 for my VROPS appliance VM.

I have several Dasboards created and I created them under my admin account let's call it "knucklehead". I created a group for us admins, let's call it "nerdtopia".

By default the Dashboards have me as owner and only my account can edit them.

How can I grant our group called "nerdtopia" the rights to edit and fully manage the Dashboards I created?

Thanks

Check VMWare Logs For Disk Corruption

0

I had an issue 6 months or so ago and VMWare support helped me recover from a corrupted VM. When troubleshooting, the rep looked through some log and showed me where it looked like there was data corruption due to a hardware issue on the server. Can you tell me where that probably was that he looked? I was hoping it was just a fluke but it looks like I'm having troubles with it again.

I'm running a Dell customized version of ESXI 5.5.

Thanks!
